The Problem

Contact-tracing will be widely adopted to facilitate easing of lockdown measures introduced to control the spread of Coronavirus. Relaxation of lockdown is essential for economic recovery but has to be balanced with protecting public health. Bluetooth (BLE) contact-tracing solutions will not be suitable in densely packed venues due to issues of RF reflection and absorption, adversely affecting the primitive ranging technique available, leading to a large number of false positives, with adverse economic consequences, and undermining public confidence.

Contact-tracing via mobile devices is viewed by many as the defining solution for contact-tracing, although industry experts have expressed concerns that lack of participation, security and accuracy problems will impact their efficacy. BLE uses Received-Signal-Strength (RSSI) to determine distance between nodes and is well known to deliver highly variable results due to:

Inaccurate data will limit the effectiveness of the solution (missed contacts) or generate an overly conservative approach with greater economic loss, and loss of public confidence. Large, densely populated venues will not be able to re-open while guaranteeing public safety, until a vaccination is available.

Convert’s TaCT platform, will record accurate trace information to identify close contacts at crowded venues, working alongside emerging mobile systems. TaCT is an enabling technology, using a superior ranging technique, is scalable and is ideally suited to this environment, locating a small tag within a radio network formed by fixed location anchors. The tag position, logged in an online database, is served to existing contact-tracing services.
